The growth of trees and fruits depends on phototropism, gravitropism, and the hormone auxin. For that reason, like other trees or fruits, banana leaves and fruit would hang downward due to gravity.

But since the banana plant is a tropical rainforest tree, it has to grow amid and beneath many other trees, which made sunlight scarce for it. So, to reach sunlight, the banana grows from bud to fruit in the direction opposite to gravity — a phenomenon called geotropism. This is called negative geotropism. Then, at one stage of its growth, the pull of gravity bends it slightly toward the ground. This is why the banana takes on this shape.
